$$$ 7 Copywriting Tips To Bring In The Bacon $$$ 

1. Use Verbs

This means using words that make you do something. So for example, words like click, download,get, take, etc.

Here is an example of WHAT NOT TO DO when writing.

Our Restaurant Is Amazing, come visit us now!

Now why is it bad? Simply put it’s not benefiting the reader. What the reader is thinking is “why do I care if they’re amazing? It doesn’t benefit me at all.”

Here is an example of WHAT TO DO when writing.

Come get free wings today during lunch hour from 10am-2pm! We’re right on the corner of 7th and Broadway!

Why is it good? It’s all about the reader! They getting something, and you’re telling them exactly when and where to get it.

2. Keep It Simple

Just as the header says, just keep it simple. What’s one of the easiest and most effective ways of doing this?


When you’re writing something to sell to someone… Please use normal everyday words. The LAST thing you want to do is take attention away from your ad because they have to think about what ostentatious means, when you could have just written flashy.

The only exception to this rule, is if you know your target demographic responds well to that type of writing style. But for the most part, if you’re B2C, just use simple everyday langauge. As if you’re talking to a 10 year old.

Don’t overthink it.

3. Use Questions

Use questions to call out your customer to disrupt them from just scrolling past your advertisement. As cliche as this is going to sound, you want them to think you’re talking directly to them, which means they’re going to pay attention.

Best question to bring to attention is your customers fears. Let’s use a hair stylist for this example. So I’m sure when you get your haircut you have an idea of what you want it to look like and even show the hair stylist a picture of what you want. The last thing you want to see when you look into that mirror, is a disaster of a haircut and now you have to walk around for a while feeling embarrassed until it grows back. Now that is a real fear, especially for women considering the modern day beauty standards that are expected of women.

Now to put it into ad form.

Would you trust this woman with your hair?

BAM! Now show a picture of the hair stylist with that headline and you now have someone who wants to find out the rest of the story! Because you just HAVE to know right?

4. Be Specific And Detailed

Don’t leave things open to interpretation. The more specific and detailed about something you can be the better. This is especially true if your business is located in some hard to see place AND the parking isn’t very obvious.

Just think about it like this. You know how you have that one friend who lives in some weird spot in a neighborhood and you made like 50 turns to get to their home? Then you realized that you only had to make 2 turns and wished they told you? Yeah it would have been nice if they said make a left on 1st, then right on Bacon st, then just keep going straight until you reach the cul-de-sac.

So when writing an ad, make sure you give them complete directions as to how to claim your offer. For example “Take exit 2b on the 5 freeway and stay in the right lane and make a right. Head east for 7 minutes and you’ll see our sign Bob’s Seafood. Make a right around the corner and park in the back. When you come inside ask for Gina and tell her you found this offer and she will take care of you.”

5. Be Relevant

It goes without saying, make sure what you’re talking is relevant to your target market. But what I want to get at here is geared more towards social media posts and ads (which you should be doing if you’re not). If you can weave in current events and hot topics with what you are selling, you will get A LOT more attention.

An example of this was during Superbowl 47 in 2013. There was a blackout during the game which caused it to be delayed obviously and since there were no lights for a while, people naturally pulled out their phones to look at stuff and post on social media. Now what good ol Nabisco did with their Oreo brand was make a simple tweet that was relevant to the blackout while it happened. They took a simple picture and put some text and posted it on twitter. It said “You can still dunk in the dark”. It promoted Oreos and that post became extremely popular.

6. Rely On Proven Copywriting Formulas

The reason why I say this is because they still work. They’re proven. I’m going to show you 2 of them right now so you can use them immediately and it gives you a template to structure out your ads.

Problem – Your sink is leaking

Agitation – It’s costing you money

Solution – Call us so we can fix it

I used this short simple example to show you that it doesn’t have to be super long. As long as you nail the points you’re golden.

Attention – Do I have dirty laundry?

Interest – They will clean it for me

Desire – Not only will they will be cleaning my laundry, I’m going to get free coffee and WiFi.

Action – I just have to take my clothes to them

There are many other proven formulas for copywriting, but these ones are what I like to use.

7. Use Call To Actions

This is the most important one. Make sure you’re telling the reader to do something. Otherwise it’s just a story and not something designed to get them to buy something from you. So at the end you tell them something such as “Like this post, comment, share, buy now, click the link to learn more/buy now, etc.” Just how when you watch youtube channels, at the end they generally all say make sure to like, comment, and subscribe so they can build their channel and hopefully make money. Life as a youtube star is rough.
